Available in over 40 shades is Lett-Lopi, which is half the weight of Alafoss Lopi. It is a perfect alternative for those who want the advantage of Lopi wool but prefer a lighter weight yarn. It's great for colorwork on cardigans and ski sweaters. Icelandic sheep fleece is double layered, and in the same way that the sheep are kept warm and dry, the wearers of Lopi can expect the same results. The wool of Icelandic sheep consists of two types of fibers, inner and outer. The inner layer of light fine fibers are soft and crinkly, insulating well against the cold, while the outer fibers are long and course and smooth - and as a result, water repellent. Moisture cannot penetrate, because it runs down the outer fibers. These fibers are irregular, and they create air spaces when that are loosely bound together. The two combined create a light but sturdy water resistant yarn.

Lovely wool

I am very much an amateur knitter and this is my first splurge on the good stuff. I wanted %100 wool as this to be a felting project, and rich colors as these going to be elf hats and slippers. When I first sat down to start there was a faint aroma that reminded me of the New Zealand sheepskins we got as children, but it quickly disappated. Such fond memories. The yarn has a nice hand and I found it easy to work with. The first elf hat knitted up nicely and I am on to the second one now. Can’t wait to try the felting in the washing machine part of the process. My imagination is already ticking away on potential future projects.
