Apu Imperial Alpaca

Apu in the native language of the Incas means "mountain god." For the Incas, the finest alpaca textiles were comparable in value to gold and the finest jewelry.

Apu is 100% Imperial Alpaca, the finest alpaca in the world. Imperial alpaca is limited to fibers only 17 microns in diameter, which is comparable to fine cashmere. It is sorted and de-haired by hand, and is available only in its natural color, raw white. This yarn has a very even 2ply spin, yielding a yarn approximately the same thickness as 3-ply baby or sock yarn.

This yarn is a perfect choice for the softest lace project ever. I would use a size 7 or 8 needle for an intricate lace project, like a fancy scarf or maybe even a US 9 for a wedding mantilla or veil. Two balls will make a handsome cowl.

Now in colors!

Apu is 100% Imperial Alpaca, the finest alpaca in the world.

  • about 109 yards per ball

    Yarn and service

Posted by SHERRY LISBY on Jan 6th 2019

I've already worked with Apu yarn and wanted more, but the LYS I worked at when I bought it had closed permanently. I came online to order some and purchased it from handknitting.com. The turnaround from order to shipment was very fast and arrived in very good condition. Thank you so much! I would definitely order from here again.

    Fabulous yarn

This is a beautiful yarn that is a dream to knit. It is delicate and splits easily, but the softness makes it very easy to work with. I am making the Misti Cowl from the Amano fall 2017 book.

    Aput Imperial Alpaca Yarn

Posted by Jacqueline P. on Aug 30th 2017

I love this yarn. It is a step above the normal alpaca fingering weight available. It knits up beautifully, with a softness that is unmatched. I knitted a cowl that is light weight yet warm, I actually wore it yesterday as it was cool here up north. The color is a raw white, not dyed. A creamy white. DEFINITELY WORTH THE INVESTMENT!
